HQ Project

HQ Project

So far we have raised £112,189.08 towards our target of £1million. To contribute to our appeal please follow this link

It has been clear for many years that Menston Scouts and Guides have outgrown our ‘shed’ on the park. One Scout Troop already has to meet in the Parish Room behind St Johns as there is not enough capacity in our HQ. The existing building was fundraised for throughout the 50s and eventually built in 1965 and is now reaching the end of its useful life.

You will see below the first plan and renders of a possible HQ for Menston S & G. We held a consultation for the general public on 6th Jan (thank you to all who attended and gave their input), plus another for leaders on 4th May, and it became clear that whilst there is a lot to love, there were some drawbacks with the current design and so it was proposed that we develop a design B that has a different aspect and layout and then we can decide between the two. I think the narrowness of the site and the long wishlist makes it difficult and there will always be compromises. But offering two designs gives a chance to weigh up what really matters.

Any and all comments welcomed at this stage.

This is such an important opportunity to design and create a purpose built space that will really cater to our needs and take us into the future of Scouting and Guiding in menston. We envisage a building that will be an attractive addition to our local park and a community resource that we can all be proud to have. Whilst the fundraising will be a long road, it is worth getting this right and this will be a Scout & Guide HQ that could last well into the next century.

Some FAQs…

HOW MUCH DO WE NEED TO RAISE?
This is a tricky question to answer because even when the plans are finalised, materials fluctuate in costs, but we have had a quantity surveyor from Shelby Group estimate the costs based on both the current iteration of the plans and similar projects around the country and he predicts a cost of £1 million.
HOW MUCH HAVE YOU RAISED SO FAR?
To date, we have raised £112,189.08, with £50k of that figure a generous pledge from the Parish Council. We have also received donations from the Menston Show, the Methodist Congregation, the Menston craft group and many many grassroots fundraisers and amazing individuals. We have also gratefully received your spare change in the fundraising tubs in many of the Menston businesses.
HAVE THE PLANS BEEN AGREED & SUBMITTED?
Not yet. We want to get it right first time and so we are still working with a couple of architects to try and get the plans to reflect all the wants and needs of the stakeholders in this project. We want a building that not only serves all the leaders and young people Scouting and Guiding in Menston but also the wider community; a building that is sustainable and future-proof; a building that the neighbours can enjoy and that we are proud to have sitting on our park.
