Hello from 3rd Menston Guides!

We are a group of 30 girls aged 10-14 who meet every Tuesday night in term-time 19.40-21.00 at the Scout & Guide Hut on Low Hall Road in Menston.

We follow the Girlguiding Programme and truly believe that girls can do anything! Each term we focus on a Theme Award to challenge girls to think more deeply about themselves and the world around them, and learn new skills as well as having lots of fun!

As well as our Tuesday meetings, girls can work towards Interest Badges at home and attend our special holiday badge days, like the Halloween Mixology Party we held in October 2023. We usually take part in at least 2 camping trips per year and also offer other trips in addition to the programme; previously attending Ilkley Cinema with Brownies & Rainbows, visiting Ilkley Pantomime, Clip n Climb, Apple Store in Leeds, Donkey Sanctuary, Chip Walk and many more.

Last year we encouraged girls to ‘Express Myself’ by putting on our very own pantomime at the Hut and raised money for the Menston Scouts and Guides HQ Fund. Girls learned to ‘Take Action’ by discussing issues that are important to them and writing letters to local MPs and their headteachers to try to make change. They also tried to break some World Records as we raised money for Children in Need in October-the world records were safe but we had so much fun.

We also promoted the ‘Have Adventures’ Theme with the girls visiting Otley Chevin to build dens and one of our leaders created a what3words scavenger hunt round the village to test their exploring skills. We also visited Robin Hole in Burley Woodhead for a Disney themed Summer Camp, where girls learned to build fires and cook their dinner on the campfire, created flags and flagpoles for their tents from scratch and tested their skills at archery.

The leader team is headed up by Ceri, a senior midwife in Leeds and former Ilkley Guide. She is joined by Allie, a teacher whose daughters have both been Menston Guides, Anna, an obstetrician from Leeds, Catrina, a wedding specialist for TUI who was a Menston Guide in the past, and Donna, a probation officer from Menston. They are helped out by Jackie (Ceri’s Mum) and a team of three young leaders between the ages of 14-18 who were Menston Guides themselves. Our team have such a varied skill set, and are deeply committed to empowering girls and young women in Menston to be their best selves and to enjoy every minute of their time with us at Guides.
